About Me

My photo
Back Road Whispers is a fanciful name for just liking to travel the back roads of the world, wondering what whispers are lingering in the weathered buildings, rusty farm equipment and closed and boarded up businesses. I stop when I am able and “photograph the past for the future” so my grandchildren and their grandchildren will see what it was like back in the “good old days” of the 20th and early 21st century. Lately I have been exploring the world listening to whispers from palaces, castles, villages, and museums. The whispers need no interpretation.

Exotic Resort Zoo

Good morning!

Welcome to the Exotic Resort Zoo

in Johnson City, Texas

My granddaughter is visiting and she is at the age of too old for the kiddie park and too young for the bar scene.  What to do with a pre-teen in the Texas heat?  You head to Johnson City and take a tour of the exotic animals that roam free on the 100+ acres they have.  My son and I had previously gone and spent a night in one of their cabins and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves so thought my animal loving granddaughter would also, but just for the day.

We had just missed the trailer going out so spent our time at the petting zoo while we waited.  This is unlike the drive through wildlife parks, they let the animals scratch their vehicles instead of yours so you wait for the next truck!  Mostly pictures with little verbiage (hard to believe from me, right?)  I don't know the animals and keep meaning to get one of their pamphlets.  If you get a chance to visit them  Information can be found at

American Idol auditions were underway when we were there but don't think the judges were too impressed with the song selection of Dolly Llama.

This little guy was having so much fun with whatever he had in his mouth or he bit off more than he could chew and got it stuck in his teeth.  He was flopping that hunk of leaves this way and that and then starting all over again.

Love these two, such trust between two totally different beings.

Is this not the sweetest face!!  Those eyes...

Horn formation was interesting to me.

My girls can raise one lip in the famous family snarl (that drives me crazy when they do it) so what do I see when visiting the petting zoo?????

As you can see it was nap time

I found a shady spot to sit and wait with a good view of the lemur enclosure.  They are fascinating little guys to watch and I had fun with my imagination making up stories to go with their antics, some I can share - grin.  Enjoy!

Hey Charlie, the Blue Apron order has arrived - wonder what is in the pail this time!

Looks like sweet potatoes or carrots - my favorites!!!

Hey Charlie, too bad they didn't send enough for you too!  Hahahaha!

 HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

No fair!!!!  I'm telling Mom!

 Benny, come here, NOW!!!

That's your brother, shame on you!!  You should share with him and not be so ugly.  You can go sit in time out and think about it while he has a snack and plays on the tire swing.

 Yummmy snacks!  Thanks, Mom

Benny's in trouble, Benny's in trouble, Benny's in trouble!!

Serves you right meany head!

Shaddup!

Watching them run around their cage I was fascinated by their ability to swing, jump, grab, climb.  This is why.

Climbing on board we took off for our tour, stopping to say hello to this beautiful baby.

When the animals hear the truck coming they know food is involved and come running

The turtles and the catfish have also learned that the vibration from the trucks means food.   As guests throw pellets to the animals some end up in the pond.  There was nothing to be seen but the water and the swans when we pulled up, then heads started popping up.  Most intelligent turtles and catfish in Texas!!

The most famous and silliest of the animals to come running is Humphrey, silly boy will follow the truck until he runs out of pasture.  Our guide said he once chased a Direct TV guy around the back yard where he was being raised as a baby.  Bet that guy's boss gave him a drug test when he told him what happened.

There was more to see besides animals running up, I particularly liked this guy sauntering over to the wagon.  For some reason I thought of Bambi's daddy - The Great Prince of the Forest.

Scottish Highlander - Gorgeous!!!

Stow- away hanging on for dear life.  Actually it was just the remains of what once was....

What my granddaughter especially wanted to see - of course it was in the shade making for such a great photo op - dark brown buffalo in shade equals big blob of darkness.  Lightened it to the max.

Even the janitors have to take a break occasionally.

This guy made me think he was placing an order t the food truck (which in actuality we were).  "Two nachos, hold the jalapenos please."

Fun day with a fun granddaughter.  Ready to go back!  Thank you, Donna, for a fun tour.

Wait!!!  Don't go!  Come back.

The end.
